Reading Corps Volunteers
Several Metro Detroit Chapter members have answered the call of the Detroit Public School for Reading Corps volunteers. Research shows that it is extremely difficult for a struggling reader to “catch up” if the child is unable to read by the end of third grade. For this reason, the Detroit Public School District has identified a goal of ensuring that by 2014, all of the current Pre-kindergarten students and those thereafter, will be able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade.
Take 25
On May 22, 2010, the Metro Detroit Chapter participated in the National Center For Missing & Exploited Children's Take 25 program at the Wayne County Community College and the Target Store located at Northland Mall, Detroit. The Metro Detroit Chapter met the Take 25 program's goal of heightening the public's awareness about children's safety issues by talking and handing out literature on issues such as talking to strangers and using the internet. Thanks to chapter member Charles Fonesca for putting this all together.

On July 18, 2009, as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program, Metro Detroit Chapter members picked up trash along a two mile section of Telegraph Road, between Interstate 96 and 5 Mile Rd. Metro Detroit Chapter members had a great time doing their part to keep Detroit clean.
